"During the course of the investigation in relation to Cardinal Pell, there has been a lot of reporting in the media and a lot of speculation about the process that has been involved in the investigation", said Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton of Victoria Police on Thursday.

Vatican Treasurer Cardinal George Pell said on Thursday that he will take a leave of absence from his post after Australian authorities charged him with multiple counts of sexual assault.

"It is important to note that none of the allegations that have been made against Cardinal Pell have, obviously, been tested in any court yet", said Patton.

"Cardinal Pell will return to Australia, as soon as possible, to clear his name following advice and approval by his doctors who will also advise on his travel arrangements", said a statement from the Archdiocese of Sydney.

He noted that Pell has cooperated with Australia's Royal Commission investigation into sex abuse and that as a bishop in Australia, worked to protect children and compensate victims.

Meanwhile, the Vatican seems to have already planned how to go ahead without Pell.

Pell currently serves as a top adviser to Pope Francis and the Vatican's top financial adviser.

It is believed he will step away from his position at the Vatican while he fights the charges. He's in charge of the Church's billions of dollars, and a trusted aide to Pope Francis himself.

The clergyman was ordained a priest in 1966 in Rome, before returning to Australia in 1971 where he had climbed the ranks of the catholic hierarchy. The news involving chief advisor Cardinal George Pell could linger longer than most since according to some details in the case, the allegations date back to his tenure in different roles within the church. Elite Daily has reached out to a representative of the Vatican for comment and will update this story with any reply.

Pell appeared before reporters on Thursday to deny the accusations, denounce what he called a "relentless character assassination" in the media and announce he would return to Australia to face the charges. He has again strenuously denied all allegations.

"Cardinal Pell is facing multiple charges in respect of historic sexual offences", he said. He says he's looking forward to his day in court, and the chance to clear his name.

"I am innocent of these charges, they are false".

The charges relate to alleged "historical" incidents, police in the state of Victoria said. "Now is not the time for that", Neil said.
