Netherlands international Wesley Sneijder has confirmed he is leaving Nice after a short spell with the Ligue 1 club.

"Nice allowed Wesley Sneijder to travel to Qatar to pass a pre-deal medical with Al Gharafa Sports Club", read a Nice statement on its official website, reports Xinhua news agency.

He followed the footsteps of Spanish star Xavi Hernandez to feature in the Qatari league, where Al Gharafa sat in mid-table with 11 points from as many matches. He's won domestic titles in the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Turkey, not to mention holding aloft the prestigious Champions League in 2010.

How will he fare in the Middle East?

Other big names to have played in Qatar include Raul and Pep Guardiola. He went on to play for Inter, Galatasaray and Nice in a glittering career that spanned 16 years.

He was the Netherlands' most capped player with a total of 133 appearances in the national squad.

Al Gharafa is quite buoyant about Wesley Sneijder's signing and has shared images of its owner and the footballer at Doha airport captioning them 'Welcome to Qatar'.

Though some may question the 33-year-old's decision to agree a move into relative obscurity, he is looking forward to pastures new.
